THE INNER WORK OF CAPITAL | Fernando Russo

THE INNER WORK OF CAPITAL – An Investor Journey to Regeneration
Fernando Russo built and sold his own company before an MBA at INSEAD, and a fresh wave of family capital, pushed him toward a question that would upend everything: what is money actually for?
Not how to grow it, not how to protect it, but what it means to put capital to work in service of something larger than return.
That question set off a ten-year investment journey spanning the Amazon, Brazil, and his adopted home of Amsterdam, as he tried to build a portfolio that created value not only in financial terms, but in the health of ecosystems and the lives of the people connected to them.
It did not go smoothly. Some bets underperformed. Some ventures failed to deliver on the promise that had looked so clear on paper. Fernando found himself pulled into a different kind of work, not spreadsheet work, but inner work. He had to set his ego aside, slow down, and pay attention to something investors rarely study: how nature organizes itself, how ecosystems generate value without domination or urgency, and what it might mean to invest the way a forest grows, patiently, interdependently, in cycles rather than quarters. Along the way, the journey tested his own family’s wealth and legacy as much as it tested his investment thesis. Experience by experience, setback by setback, he found a path where financial return, ecological regeneration, and social benefit stopped competing and became expressions of the same underlying logic.
This is both a personal and a practical book. Investors will recognize the discipline of due diligence and portfolio strategy; entrepreneurs seeking impact capital will find a rare, candid look at how investors actually think and struggle. But its deepest offering may be its central argument: that comparing ourselves to artificial, extractive benchmarks is a trap, and that real value, like nature’s, often arrives slower than we’d like, but with a consistency that outlasts any single fund cycle. The Inner Work of Capital is Fernando Russo’s honest account of a decade spent finding a different way of measuring what matters, and it’s for anyone rethinking what capital is truly for.

Fernando Russo is an impact investor and founder of Meraki Impact, a platform dedicated to supporting regenerative business across food systems, biodiversity, and systemic change.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of São Paulo and MBA from INSEAD.

After a six-year corporate career spanning logistics at McDonald’s, sales at Ambev, and marketing at Playboy Brazil, Fernando sold his entrepreneurial venture—a live marketing agency—in 2015 and committed fully to purpose-driven work. His journey blends impact investing  with storytelling, regenerative agriculture, and food systems.

Beyond his professional work, Fernando is a lifelong traveler, having visited 120 countries, a student of ecology, and a practitioner of nature-grounded spiritual traditions that inform his approach to life and work.
